Orienteering appears in the Nordic countries by the end of the 19th century, it then expands throughout Europe, the United States and Canada, to be later on practiced in Asia, Africa and the rest of America -reaching its greatest development in Brazil.

1890 October 7th, the first competition organized by Tjalve in Norway.
1897 The first manifestation of orienteering in Norway.
1919 The first competition of Orienteering in Stockholm, with 200 participants.
1932 The first international competition, starting point of the spread of the sport in the European countries.
1942 It is practiced in Swedish schools.
1949 Ski Orienteering gains Olympic status.
1955 It starts being practiced in Spanish camps.
1959 The IOF, International Orienteering Federation, is formed.
1962 It is developed into recreational outdoor activities.
1979 The first Orienteering club is created in Spain.
1993 Creation of Agrupación Española de clubes de Orientación (Spanish Association of Orienteering Clubs).
1996 Federación del Deporte Orientación de la República Argentina (Orienteering Federation of Argentina).
1999 First National Orienteering Competition in Argentina.
2003 Organization of the third Course of Specific Cartography, level I, given by José Otavio Dornelles (Brazil) at Inst. Sup. De Ed. Fis. Bella Vista.
2003 The first Argentine athlete (Lorena Kleinmann) to compete in the World Orienteering Championship, Swiss O Week, in Switzerland.
2004 The first Argentine (Lorena Kleinmann) and South American athlete to compete in the Park World Tour in Italy and China.
2004 The O-Seminar, level 2, takes place in Argentina, given by Per-Olof Bengtsson (Sweden) and Pentty Koponen (Finland) at Secretaría de Deporte de la Nación (National Sports Office), (CENARD - National Center for High Performance Sports, or CENARD for its acronym in Spanish).
2005 Adriano Bevilaqua (Brazil) teaches the 4th Mapping Course, at Universidad de Flores, first organization of Orienteering events in Secretaría de Deporte de la Nación (CENARD).
2003/2006 Joint participation of the Argentine team in the Swedish 5-days, O-Ringen, that brings together 15,000 orienteers from all over the world.
2006 Creation of Asociación del Deporte Orientación de la República Argentina (Orienteering Association in Argentina).
2006 Argentine participation in the WOC (World Orienteering Championship) Tour in Denmark.
2006 South American tour with European orienteers from Orienteering Competitions, organized by Per_Olof Bengtsson.
